I never have Offenders exist on all sides, whether it's a blue state or a red state. and equality for women in the workplace shouldn't be optional Roxanne Jones, a founding editor of ESPN Magazine and former vice president at ESPN, has worked as a producer, reporter and editor at the New York Daily News and The Philadelphia Inquirer. Jones is co-author of "Say it Loud: An Illustrated History of the Black Athlete. She talks politics, sports and culture weekly on Philadelphia's Praise 107. 9FM. The views expressed here are solely hers. (CNN) There's a bad case of selective amnesia spreading through Washington these days and it has infected the public debate about sexual harassment. Instead of focusing on how to better protect women from workplace violence and harassment and establish measurable ways to hold their abusers accountable, the debate swirls around which party. Republican or Democrat. is worse for women when it comes to sexual misconduct. The problem is that from Democrats John F. Kennedy, John Edwards, Bill Clinton and now, Al Franken, to Republicans Bob Packwood, Donald Trump and the ongoing scandal around Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, who's accused of sexual abuse and pursuit of underage women, members of both parties have been been guilty of sexual misconduct that betrays their public claims to respect women and belies any commitment to our full equality. Each party talks a good game when they need the "woman vote. but for me, no political party has any right to claim the moral high road when it comes to respecting women. We are not there yet. Here's why. Have you ever heard your coworker, your daughter, your wife or mother. anyone you know who has experienced harassment or abuse. ever blame the political party of the perpetrator? I never have. Sexual abuse and sexual harassment are not about politics. They are always about power and the subjugation of another person. And you don't need to label yourself a feminist or liberal to feel this way. That's why it's time for anyone who's ever been abused, or harassed at work to start taking names. Use this powerful #MeToo moment to break the silence and stop being victims. Not because we want to be heroes, or join the next Women's March. though it's fine if we choose to do so. but because we know we deserve better than the constant sexual abuse and discrimination that we have had to put up with in the workplace for generations. We know we deserve at a bare minimum a non-hostile work environment. At least, that. We know we're tired of it and that it has to stop. On Thursday, Franken made two apologies for allegations made by a woman of groping and kissing her without her consent. Tuesday, after shocking testimony from lawmakers describing the toxic climate of sexual abuse in the House of Representatives, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) announced that "anti-harassment and anti-discrimination" training for all members and staff will now be mandatory. Ryan did not mention, however, any specific details or point to legislation that would achieve the goal of ensuring an equitable workplace environment. "I think the culture in this country has been awakened to the fact that we have a serious epidemic in the workplace. said Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) who's led the push to reform sexual harassment policies on Capitol Hill. During Tuesday's hearing Speier and Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-VA) a member of the House Administration Committee, detailed a workplace culture more fitting for a gentlemen's strip club. Tales of women who have been subjected to lewd behavior and jokes, touched inappropriately. Stunningly, Comstock retold a story about a young female staffer who had been tricked into visiting an (as yet unnamed) lawmaker's home to deliver work materials. When she arrived, he opened the door in a nothing but a towel and exposed himself. She fled, went back to work and eventually found another job. as victims of workplace abuse are often forced to do. Said Comstock in her opening statement: It's time to say no more. I'm with her. I'm hoping these staffers will name names. Out those abusers. Their behavior is appalling and they don't deserve the protection of your silence. None of these predators do. Thirty years ago, Anita Hill stepped up to the mic to put sexual harassment in the workplace on the national stage and educate us all about the challenges working women face in this regard. Hill e xcruciatingly described unwanted sexual advances that she was subject to both at the Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) while working under her then boss Clarence Thomas. There was no system in place for her to report her abuse, and certainly no mandatory sexual harassment training. Similar to today, Hill's entire fight felt fixed as Republicans rushed to shoot down her claims and cast them as nothing more than part of a liberal backlash against Republicans who wanted to nominate Thomas as the first black conservative Supreme Court nominee. Liberals and feminists lined up behind Hill, a well-heeled, educated, fearless black professor who played well on TV. This conveniently made it easier to ignore the racism that shadowed the hearings, or the feminist agenda itself. History has a funny way of repeating itself, especially if we are afraid to examine why a battle was lost. We need to ask why, 30 years later, we are still seeing rampant sexual harassment and violence against women in the workplace. This time around we can learn from past mistakes. We don't have to continue to stumble over race, class and politics when it comes to women's equality. Because whether, it's Hollywood, Capitol Hill, Corporate America or a cashier's job at Walmart. whether it's a blue state or a red state. equality for women in the workplace shouldn't be optional. We're done waiting. It is our right and we intend to claim it even if it means kicking ass and naming names, one by one.

Plot [ edit] A childhood accident leaves Leo mute and his devout Amish mother refuses surgery. As an adult in 2035, he works as a bartender at a Berlin strip club owned by Maksim and dates cocktail waitress Naadirah. She confides in her friend Luba that she has not told Leo about her past or her desperate need for money. After Stuart, a rowdy customer, sexually harasses Naadirah, Leo assaults him. Naadirah talks Leo down by telling him that she needs to keep her job. Naadirah shows up at Leo's apartment and attempts to tell him about something important. Leo shows her an elaborate bed he has been carving as a present for her. Naadirah is overcome with emotion and they have sex. Elsewhere, Maksim's mobsters meet two American surgeons, Cactus Bill and Duck, who run a black-market clinic. Bill desperately wants to leave Berlin and has pressed Maksim to provide forged documents for him and his young daughter, Josie. Duck, however, enjoys living in Berlin and runs a side business where he installs implants and performs cybernetic surgery. Stuart returns to the strip club and taunts Leo, leading to a fight and Maksim firing Leo. When he's unable to contact Naadirah, Leo asks Luba for help, but Luba refuses. An anonymous text message leads Leo to a black-market bazaar run by Stuart. Bill and Josie are there, and Bill takes Josie away as Stuart confronts Leo. Suddenly remembering that Naadirah wrote an address on his notepad a while back, Leo leaves the bazaar after using charcoal to read the imprint. Naadirah's address leads Leo to Oswald. When Leo expresses interest in a picture of Naadirah, Oswald assumes Leo works for Maksim's underling Nicky Simsek, who is skimming money from Maksim's prostitutes. Leo meets with Simsek, who is babysitting Josie. Leo befriends Josie and leaves the money from Oswald and a note incriminating Simsek in front of Maksim's henchmen. After tracking down Naadirah's address, Leo discovers Luba instead. Luba admits that he and Naadirah have been working as prostitutes to earn the money she so desperately needs. Luba also expresses anger at Naadirah having loved Leo instead of himself. Tracking down Naadirah's mother, Leo learns Naadirah is Josie's mother and realizes Bill is responsible for Naadirah's disappearance. After Bill and Duck torture Simsek on Maksim's orders, Bill discovers pictures of naked children on Duck's computer. Bill threatens to break Duck's arms if he ever touches a child, but Bill becomes elated when Maksim reports he has the forged documents ready. Bill takes Duck out on the town in celebration, offering his house to Duck. It is during this time that Duck casually reveals that he was the one who had been anonymously texting Leo, as a way to vent his frustrations with Bill. A security guard stops them for a casual theft, and Bill threatens to kill the guard. When Duck intervenes, Bill strikes him. Upset by this treatment, Duck texts Bill's destination to Leo. Leo takes a support beam from the bed he made, uses it to beat up Maksim and his henchmen, and then takes Bill's forged documents. In Bill's house, Leo finds a badly wounded Simsek and Naadirah's asphyxiated corpse in a bag, murdered by Bill. After killing Simsek, Bill attacks Leo, only to have Leo impale Bill on his own knife. Duck arrives at Bill's house, refuses to take Bill to a hospital, and taunts him with the knowledge that he will kidnap Josie. Duck knocks out Leo and implants an electrolarynx so he can hear Leo apologize for killing Bill. When Leo refuses, Duck takes him to the bridge in the one photo Leo has of Naadirah. Leo still refuses to apologize, takes a deep breath and throws them both into the water. Duck drowns and Leo shouts a warning to Josie not to get close to the bridge's edge. Both of them safe and sound, Leo tells Josie he will take her to her maternal grandmother. After some time has passed a healed Leo sits with Josie in a restaurant, both drawing pictures. Cast [ edit] Production [ edit] The film was in development hell for many years, but Jones always said he wished to direct it and has described it as a "spiritual sequel" to Moon, heavily inspired by the Ridley Scott film Blade Runner (1982. 8] During the film's development, Jones had expressed his desire for Sam Rockwell to reprise his role from Moon in a cameo appearance that was to act as an epilogue for the character, 9] 7] and that the film would be the second installment in a trilogy consisting of Moon, Mute and yet to be announced third film. 11] 12] In October 2016, Justin Theroux officially joined the cast, joining Skarsgård, Rudd, Noel Clarke and Florence Kasumba. Filming [ edit] Filming began on September 28, 2016. 15] The film was shot on site in Berlin by cinematographer Gary Shaw, who worked with Jones on Moon. Music [ edit] Clint Mansell composed the film's score. In a series of Instagram posts titled Mute & Me, he cited the culture of 20th century Berlin as a major influence, 18] claiming that "Berlin has been, and continues to be, a cultural hot bed of our times. Mansell drew from multiple forms of Berlin culture, including "poets and artists, musicians and philosophers, dreamers and drunks, lovers and the lost and lonely, the wild, the beautiful, and the damned. During background research for the film, Mansell claimed to have drawn inspiration from works of German expressionism such as Metropolis, the crime drama M, as well as works of classic and contemporary film noir like In A Lonely Place, Cape Fear, Chinatown, Brick, and Blood Simple. Mansell also looked at the works of New German Cinema filmmakers like Werner Herzog, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Wim Wenders. He points to Fassbinder's World on a Wire as a specific sci-fi influence from that era. He also looked at the krautrock group Popul Vuh and their collaborations with Herzog on Aguirre, Wrath of God, and Nosferatu the Vampyre. Mansell cited Jones' father David Bowie 's Berlin Trilogy of albums as being a major influence in terms of representing Berlin culture, along with other Brian Eno -produced albums like Ultravox. Release [ edit] Originally scheduled for release in 2017, 19] Mute was released on Netflix on 23 February 2018. Marketing [ edit] The film was heavily promoted and discussed by Jones on Twitter with production stills and concept art. On 6 January 2017 three stills from the film were released, showing characters Leo, Cactus Bill, and Duck with the backdrop of a futuristic Berlin. 22] Critical response [ edit] On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 20% based on 76 reviews, with an average rating of 4. 3/10. The website's critical consensus reads, Visually polished but narratively derivative and overall muddled, Mute is a would-be sci-fi epic whose title serves as an unfortunate guide to how it might be best enjoyed. 23] On Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, the film received a weighted average score of 35 out of 100, based on 24 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews. 24] References [ edit] Evangelista, Chris (January 11, 2018. The Morning Call Oct 09, 2019 5:11 PM PHILADELPHIA Without coming right out and saying it, Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson certainly hinted on Wednesday that oft-injured cornerback Sidney Jones might be approaching the end of his rope. Jones missed all but one game of his rookie season in 2017 while recovering from a torn Achilles tendon suffered during his pro day at Washington, then missed most of last season with a recurring hamstring issue. This year, he appears to be headed down the same path as 2018 after leaving the Green Bay game early with a hamstring strain and not playing at all last Sunday against the New York Jets despite being dressed for the game. Jones was a full participant in practice on Wednesday, but was listed on the teams first injury report of the week. “From a players standpoint, I think you sort of have to push yourself. through that and feel that level of comfort. Pederson said. Everybodys built a little differently. The body gets tugged and pulled in different ways, and we do everything we can through our medical staff to keep them healthy. ” Pederson wouldnt say he was displeased that Jones doesnt seem to have a higher pain threshold, but he didnt seem OK with it, either. “I think sometimes with an injury, I dont care what type of injury, you get to the point where just through your rehab and conditioning you have to push yourself, ” Pederson said. “You have to bust through and say, OK, I feel good. I still might be a little sore, but I feel good. Thats what I mean by that — that threshold where you kind of break through the glass and youre on the other side of it. And then once you get to that point, all the mental stuff goes away and now you can just focus on ball again. ” Injuries have kept Eagles CB Sidney Jones (left) from being able to keep up in the NFL. (Matt Rourke/AP) Thats something Jones hasnt been able to do for basically his entire pro career, which is in its third year and not getting any better. Jones latest injury comes at the worst possible time. Jalen Mills (foot, PUP) and CreVon LeBlanc (foot-IR) havent been available at all, and Ronald Darby (hamstring) and Avonte Maddox (neck) were injured in Week 4 and remain out indefinitely. Thats forced the Eagles to turn to the likes of Craig James, Orlando Scandrick and Ryan Lewis, who all were on the street for at least part of this season, to play alongside Rasul Douglas and hope that Jones, drafted 43rd overall in 2017, can contribute again. At the time, the Eagles thought they had a steal when they drafted Jones, who had a first-round grade but fell into the second round because of his injury. Now hes closer to being labeled a bust than an actual value. And his coach might not even disagree. The Eagles are sending out mixed messages about running backs Miles Sanders and Jordan Howard and who might get the ball the most and everything else. Pederson on Monday did hint that Howard, who leads the team in rushing yards (248) and yards per attempt (4. 7) has merited more involvement in the offense. But by Wednesday, he wasnt so sure anymore. “Im kind of viewing it as whoever kind of gets the hot hand and how the game kind of unfolds with the style of running we do, ” he said "Weve talked about this before. We have certain runs for certain guys. It just so happened that the last couple, the way the defenses have played, that Jordan has kind of gotten more of the touches. It takes nothing away from Miles. Miles is very capable of doing that. Were comfortable with Miles, very confident with Miles. Philadelphia Eagles' Miles Sanders carries the ball against the New York Jets last Sunday. (Matt Rourke/AP) “He might be a little better in the passing game than, say, Jordan is, so weve used him there as well. But sometimes its the hot hand, but all our guys are very capable of handling the load. ” In other words, it might be Jordan Howard who gets the bulk of the carries — unless its not. WR DeSean Jackson (abdomen) CB Ronald Darby (hamstring) CB Avonte Maddox (neck) RB Corey Clement (shoulder) DT Timmy Jernigan (foot) CB Orlando Scandrick (illness) and RB Darren Sproles (quad) did not practice. S Rodney McLeod (knee) and T Jason Peters (knee) were limited. The injuries to Sproles, Clement and Jackson mean the Eagles could be scrambling to find a punt returner this Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. Wide receiver Nelson Agholor has some experience and filled in last week, but all he would say on Wednesday was: “We dont know whats going to happen, but if my number gets called to go back, Ill be ready. ” All Pederson would say was: “Were going to work a couple guys there this week, ” and, “I do, ” when asked if he didnt know yet who will handle the duties on Sunday. Beyond that, the coach gave no more clues. That has left at least one writer to speculate that the solution could be right in their building: Practice-squad running back Boston Scott. Sproles could go to the injured reserve list or reserve/retired list, because with newcomers Jordan Howard and Miles Sanders having taken over the bulk of the running-back chores even before Sproles injury, its not like the team is depending on him anymore. Something to keep an eye on this week, at the very least. Morning Call reporter Nick Fierro can be reached at 610-778-2243 or.
